Schubert Club Mix:
"tenThing" Thursday, 3/16/17, 7:30pm at Aria
World-renowned Norwegian trumpeter, Tine Thing Helseth formed her ten-person (all female) brass ensemble in 2007 after she and some trumpet playing friends watched a string orchestra. They were inspired to recreate the same level of ensemble on brass instruments, playing great repertoire at the highest level possible. tenThing’s music are all original arrangements by Norwegian guitarist and arranger Jarle G. Storløkken. Their pieces (sometimes with choreography) span an eclectic range of repertoire from Grieg and Bizet to Piazzolla and Kurt Weill.
International Artist Series (Coffee Concerts):
Miah Persson, Florian Boesch, Malcolm Martineau, Wednesday, 3/29/17, 10:30am at Ordway Concert Hall
Accompanied by Malcolm Martineau—one of the world’s leading collaborative pianists and favorite among Schubert Club audiences—soprano Miah Persson and baritone Florian Boesch each make their debut in the the Schubert Club’s International Artist Series. As a member of the Royal Swedish Opera, soprano Miah Persson has wowed audiences with “spine-tingling moments of vocal splendour” (Edinburgh Spotlight), while the effusive and natural brightness of her voice beguiles listeners with a “sense of gentle repose . . . mixing charm, depth and romantic ardour” (The Sunday Times). Similarly, Austrian baritone Florian Boesch “doesn’t just sing this music, he inhabits it to the hilt” (The Independent), delivering “a lived experience, with flashes of transcendence” (The New York Times). Helping to shape this special performance, pianist Malcolm Martineau, brings extraordinary chemistry and freshness to every piece of music he plays. Don’t miss this unique, one-of-a-kind performance by three international masters.
Alexandre Tharaud, Friday, 4/28/17, 10:30am at Ordway Concert Hall
Despite a flourishing international career that includes performances at such legendary venues as Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Royal Festival Hall and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in his native Paris, pianist Alexandre Tharaud only played in the U.S. for the first time in January 2015. Clearly, it was well worth the wait. NY Times critic Vivien Schweitzer hailed his debut performance at Carnegie Hall as full of both “articulation and wild exuberance.” As the son of a dance teacher at the Opéra de Paris and the grandson of a violinist, it should come as no surprise that Tharaud’s technical expertise, his “range of touch and colour, and his sheer enthusiasm, shine through every jewel-like piece” (The Guardian.) What is a bit strange, perhaps, is that Tharaud refuses to keep a piano at his own residence for fear that he will come to prefer improvisation and experimentation to rigorous practice. All the better for his audiences who continually delight in his “crisply articulated and vividly etched” (NY Times) renditions of Bach and others. The Schubert Club is proud to welcome Alexandre Tharaud to the Ordway Concert Hall stage for two dates in April 2017 for his International Artist Series debut.

Interested in Astronomy? This Small Gathering is a great early introduction to the wonders of space and the tools used for observing celestial objects for preschoolers and young elementary students with their families. Alaina and Emily from childcare and Michael Kauper, a local astronomer from the Minnesota Astronomical Society, will guide families through an evening of fun and exploration.
Families will meet at 5:00 at Eagle Lake Observatory (Carver County Baylor Regional Park, 10775 County Road 33, Norwood-Young America, MN), about 35 minutes drive from Edina, to learn about stargazing, do some space themed crafts (including a poster you can take home!), read some space themed stories, eat a picnic dinner, and view the MOON through a telescope. Never used a telescope before? Our astronomer does all the work for you and will tell you exactly what to do! Don't worry about your kids bumping or moving the telescope, either, this program is especially for KIDS.
Registration is PER CHILD, with one or two accompanying adult(s). Only THREE spaces remain.
Please note- location is away from the metro area to decrease "light pollution" for better viewing of the night sky. It's worth the trip! Telescope viewing will primarily be of the moon due to later sunset and young children's ability to view through a telescope, but older kids or families who want to stay up late might get to do some star gazing (or view other planets) later at night if you decide to stay. Dinner will be "picnic" style (cold sandwiches). Baylor park also has a playground.
